Magnesium<\/h4>

Serpentine: What is it?<\/h4>

Serpentinite is a metamorphic rock consisting largely of serpentine (a generic name covering several mineral species).
It owes its name to its scale-like appearance and a particular sensation to the touch, which may have evoked the skin of a snake.<\/p>

Mainly made up (more than 75%) of antigorite (a magnesium phyllosilicate), it is a yellowish to greenish (even dark green) rock or
presenting greenish inclusions (porphyritic form). It comes from the alteration of a peridotite in the presence of water.<\/p>

Serpentinite is a soft rock (hardness: 4 to 5), with a density of 2.5-2.6 g\/cm3<\/p>

Magnesium<\/h4>
